The Christmas Miracle

How to Contribute

The Community Center of the Holy Spirit

Hands for Christ Ministry is the non-profit corporation that supports the Centro Comunitario Del Espiritu Santo (Community Center of the Holy Spirit) in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.

Built on the site of a former garbage dump, the center was born of what many call a miracle — the feeding of hundreds of residents with food brought for a tailgate Christmas dinner in 1972.

By the grace of God and the hard work of residents and volunteers from around the world, the Center has blossomed into an island of hope in a sea of poverty.

Today the Center houses medical, dental and eye clinics, a daycare facility, community dining hall, school and “La Tienda del Senor” (The Lord’s Store) selling food and basics at below wholesale prices.

Health Care

The health clinic provides medical, dental and eye care along with a testing lab and pharmacy.  The dentist averages about 52 neighborhood patients a week.  The medical clinic has three doctors rotating to provide 6 days of care with about 35 patients per day.  The eye clinic provides one-a-week eye examinations and eye glasses.

The Lord’s Store

For over 30 years, more than 300 households shop weekly at “La Tienda del Senor,” the Lords’s Store.  Here, basic commodities are offered at 20% below wholesale prices.  And groceries are delivered without charge to 60-70 of the neighborhood’s sick, elderly and disabled.

Meals

More than 200 nutritious breakfasts and lunches are lovingly prepared and served daily to the children of the Community Center by a group of dedicated women from the community.

Daycare

Children prosper and grow under the loving care of staff in the day care opened in 1991 to serve poor working mothers.  More than 30 children are cared for every day.

School

Many neighborhood children do not have access to public education so the Center offers general classes for 10-14-year-olds until they can gain entrance to local schools.  The average number of students served at the Community Center is between 60 and 70.  An adult education service serves over 100 students from the neighborhood helping with grammar and preparation for a GED equivalent.

Battered Women's Shelter

The Community Center recently added a battered women's shelter to serve women in the neighborhood.
